The students thought I was crazy for pulling the blinds down and making the classroom dark without having the SmartBoard! These small flashlights were delivered from Amazon last night and these first graders had a blast finding their sight words! To practice sight words in walk-to groups, we played Race to the Top! They were so proud after the activity that they asked me to take their picture. How could I say no?!

My first grade walk-to group focus is sight words fluency! We have been working on speed and accuracy by playing Bingo, Fluency & Fitness, and practicing flash cards. We ended the week together by playing Swat! I would call out a sight word and they would race to find the word the quickest. It was so much fun to see their smiles and hear their laughter as they had fun in learning.
My first-grade groups have practiced all the vowel sounds now! A E I O U Today, the students used letter tiles to land on a picture. They had to decide if the word had a short or long u vowel sound. The short u sounds won!! Nothing makes a teacher happier than hearing the students say, "That was so fun! Can we do that again tomorrow?" When they don't even realizing that they are learning, but just think they are having fun..that is why I love teaching! My third grade walk-to group played the Cause and Effect game with partners. They had so much fun and were begging to keep playing, even after I let them stay a few minutes later than usual. It was fun and friendly competition, but they worked hard to practice their reading skills, too! The first grade students had fun practicing their spelling words in shaving cream!
Learning is more fun when you get to work with your friends! The 4th and 5th grade students in my walk-to groups are working on the comprehension skill of making predictions. I decided to add in some writing practice this week. The students were seated in groups and given several dice with pictures on them. Together, they used these pictures as prompts to create a story. Each student would write for one minute, then move the paper to the next person. Their creativity definitely shined in this activity as the stories were exciting to read! The 3rd graders are working on cause and effect. After writing different causes and effects from situations given to them, they had to work together to match statements. It was fun to see them problem solve to reach a goal! This week was full of fun since it was Halloween! My first grade students used chalk to create skeletons. They added special touches to make the skeletons unique. After drawing, the students gave their skeletons names and wrote about what they like to do on Halloween night. I love their creativity! Every Thursday, we practice spelling words. These words are often sight words that will help the students with reading. This week, we did some hands-on learning by using the letter tiles. The students enjoyed the challenge of finding their letters and rearranging them to create new words.
My second grade walk-to group just finished reading Cam Jansen and the Mystery Writer Mystery. We had great discussions throughout the book about our predictions. The students created their own quiz questions and I compiled them into an online Kahoot! quiz. Today, we went to the computer lab and the laughter was endless. The students had so much fun with this friendly competition to practice reading comprehension! My third grade walk-to group is focusing on comparing and contrasting texts. I took them to the computer lab this week, where they were able to read two texts on similar topics. Then, they practiced typing comparisons and contrasts between the two stories. This skill will be helpful in so many ways!
This week, I was searching for a hands-on way for students to practice reading skills and came across a set of Versa-Tiles. The students work together to answer questions from a workbook, then place tiles on a board to create a pattern. My favorite part of using these materials is that the students can check their work independently based on the pattern that is created on the back of the tiles! I can't wait to use these with my 1st graders next week, too!
My second grade walk-to group just started reading the chapter book, Cam Jansen and the Mystery Writer Mystery. They are taking turns reading the paragraphs aloud to each other while also thinking about questions that can be made into a quiz at the end of the book. Their curiosity is already shining! The first grade students played Roll, Add, Color - Halloween Style this week with a partner to practice addition facts. It was fun competition! The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are working on comprehension skills. They have been working on main idea and sequence for the past few weeks. On Thursday, they enjoyed playing board games that challenged their comprehension and allowed them to work in partners! The 1st and 2nd grade students participate in Math Mondays! This week, they played Roll It, Tic Tac Toe to practice addition facts. The smiles and laughs were constant! |
