My first grade walk-to group has been working on their heart words for a few weeks now. We have played games on the SmartBoard and in the classroom along with practiced with our flash cards, but yesterday I decided to switch it up a little! The students had to create pictures using pattern blocks while reading the words. Their creativity and innovation really shined as they used the different blocks to create the shapes. It was so fun to watch their little hands and minds work! My fifth grade walk-to group did their first week of centers and they worked so hard! One group read an instructional level text with me, then we focused on restating the question in written answers. The other group played Kaboom! with their sight words. The laughs and smiles filled the room!

The students thought I was crazy for pulling the blinds down and making the classroom dark without having the SmartBoard! These small flashlights were delivered from Amazon last night and these first graders had a blast finding their sight words! To practice sight words in walk-to groups, we played Race to the Top! They were so proud after the activity that they asked me to take their picture. How could I say no?! My first grade walk-to group focus is sight words fluency! We have been working on speed and accuracy by playing Bingo, Fluency & Fitness, and practicing flash cards. We ended the week together by playing Swat! I would call out a sight word and they would race to find the word the quickest. It was so much fun to see their smiles and hear their laughter as they had fun in learning.
