Each week, the first grade students practice their spelling words in my classroom. Yesterday, they practiced putting the words in alphabetical order and cracking codes using beginning sounds from pictures. Sometimes, we will write the words in shaving cream, Play-Doh, or play Sparkle, too! My fifth grade walk-to group is working on finding the main idea and details. To promote movement, I taped task cards in the elementary hallway. They walk from card to card and answer the questions provided. They love moving around!

These first grade students enjoyed playing Flyswatter Find with their sight words. The giggles were endless!! This week, the students got to use bingo daubers to practice matching uppercase and lowercase letters. The older students also used the daubers to determine if words were real or nonsense. They loved using these instead of crayons or markers! The second grade students got to practice their weekly spelling words by writing them in shaving cream. They loved making a mess and didn't even realize that they were learning at the same time. I loved this activity as it also cleaned my tables! (: The third grade students are working on reading fluency (speed and accuracy). They worked with a partner to do one-minute timed readings. Each time, they get better and their confidence boosts! The second graders have been practicing their sight words, so we played a friendly game of Go-Kart Rally! It was a lot of fun! The first graders completed more sight word puzzles this week! They are really getting the hang of working together to learn!
The first grade students have been working hard on letter names and sounds! They love practicing by playing Lexia on the computers and I introduced them to the the Alphabet Cookie Game this week! Two groups also have been working on their sight words and worked together to complete puzzles. The fifth graders are also working on their sight words. This week, they have played Bingo and games on the SmartBoard! Crestwood third grade wants to thank the generous benefactor that sent our students to Red's Fun Zone for an afternoon of laser tag, mini golf, and arcade games. The students had a blast and so did the teachers! The students worked in small groups to complete reading and math challenges to "escape". They enjoyed this activity and all students safely escaped!! We practiced writing our spelling words in Play-Doh today! Flash Masters are a fun way to practice math facts! The students enjoy taking timed tests at their independent level and compete to get the most correct in 1 minute. While studying the Irish Potato Famine, the students were challenged to decorate potatoes to look like people. They wrote short biographies and presented these to the class. How fun are their ideas! The students enjoyed the challenge of building simple machines, such as levers, pulleys, screws, wheel and axles, and inclined planes, out of snack foods! |
