As many of you are aware, I will begin my student teaching experience in just four short days. I have been anxiously awaiting this semester since I first started my educational career at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. I have created this blog to serve as a reflective journal of my experiences both inside, and outside, of the classroom.
I feel it appropriate to share why I chose to continue my education and earn my degree in elementary education. During my junior and senior years of high school, I had the opportunity to serve as a student intern at Carolyn Wenz Elementary School in Mrs. Schmitt's fourth grade classroom. This experience was life-changing in many ways. Prior to helping in the classroom, I was unsure of what I wanted to do after graduation. I had considered many different majors ranging from athletic training, accounting, and engineering. However, the joys and rewards of working with children was overpowering. I truly enjoyed working with students and helping to make a difference in their lives. Through that experience, I acted as a role model for the students with examples of respect, dedication, and patience.
Several teachers in the past have shared lessons with me that will continue to help me prepare for my future. These teachers have taught me the importance of prioritizing tasks, applying myself to different situations, and remaining fully dedicated to academics while balancing athletics and extracurricular activities. I
would like the opportunity to share the characteristics of these teachers with the prospective students of my own to maintain their interest in academics. I will work hard to be the teacher with whom my students are comfortable enough to come to me for advice or to talk. On the other hand, while I am their friend, I also want my students to clearly realize that I am a professional and their teacher.
It is my hope that you continue to enjoy this blog. I plan on not only including thoughts and experiences from the classroom, but also lesson plans and ideas that have and have not worked for me personally.
