This week I introduced a new vocabulary review exercise to my third grade reading group. The girls absolutely loved it and have begged to play every day! This exercise is a great way for the students to practice their weekly vocabulary words while working off some excess energy.
To play the Fly Swatter game, I wrote the weekly vocabulary words on index cards. Since there are four girls in my group, I used four different colored index cards so that each girl is only looking for a specific color. Then, I taped the cards to the white board, in no necessary order. When the game begins, the students stand in front of the board and listen to the definition of a vocabulary word. They swat the correct answer using their individual fly swatters.

These fly swatters were on sale at Dollar General, 3 for $1. This picture was taken from another source, but there are many different designs.
There are many ways that this exercise can be differentiated to fit the needs of a mathematics or science lesson. I look forward to experimenting with this exercise many more times!
