If you think that a teacher's job is easy or follows the simple 8-3 shift, you are sadly mistaken. During my first day of student teaching, I gained an even higher respect for teachers as they have such a demanding career.
I arrived at Dixie Bee Elementary School this morning around 7:40 and was warmly welcomed by several staff members. Anxious to begin the day, Mrs. Kraly and I quickly exchanged greetings then set out for our first destination. The rest of the day was quite busy and allowed for little resting time (which was expected). Included below is a brief summary of events:
8:00-8:30 am - Push in to a 1st grade classroom to help a student complete morning work. (Today's morning work included correcting sentences and mental math problems.)
8:30-9:00 am - Pull out two 1st grade students to work on literacy skills. (Today, the students worked on stretching words and recognizing beginning sounds.)
9:00-9:45 am - Push in to a Kindergarten classroom to help a student with autism. (This student was practicing his lunch number and we took a trip to the cafeteria for additional practice.)
9:45-10:15 am - Pull out four 3rd grade students to work on literacy. (The students only had time to take a picture walk in their new books and review vocabulary words.)
10:15-10:35 am - This is the designated recess time for primary grades. I helped the Teaching Assistant make copies of practice assignments.
10:45-11:00 am - Since the Kindergarten students are still not comfortable with the lunch line procedures, I helped the teachers with this process.
11:00-11:30 am - Pull out four 2nd grade students to work on literacy skills. (Today, we discussed what it means to depend on a friend.)
11:30-12:10 pm - Lunch time! I enjoyd a short lunch break before heading back to the classroom to revise Mrs. Kraly's lesson plan template.
12:10-1:55 pm - Push in to a 3rd grade classroom to help with math. (The lesson today was about creating charts and graphs using the number of letters in a name. There was a lot of interaction and engagement!)
1:55-2:25 pm - Pull out four 2nd grade students for math interventions. (While Mrs. Kraly worked with this group, I changed her calendar for September.)
2:30-2:50 pm - Prepare for car duty.
2:50-4:10 pm - Staff meeting.
I have quickly learned that in this profession I need to invest in running shoes (or at least more comfortable shoes)! I am looking forward to spending the next 8 weeks as a Bee!
